Uniforms of Waterloo in Colour, Philip Haythornthwaite, Jack Cassin-Scott, Mike Chappell.

Uniforms of Waterloo is concerned with the actual uniforms worn in the three days of fighting 16–18 June 1815, which brought about the final downfall of Napoleon Bonaparte. Although some of the full-dress uniforms are illustrated, the emphasis is on the authentic appearance of the men who fought in the battle; on what they actually looked like, rather than how they should have appeared according to official regulations.

In order to establish the true appearance of these uniforms an immense amount of research has gone into the book, including some from previously untapped resources, from eye-witness accounts of the campaign, and from extant uniforms and equipment.

The introduction provides a short re-appraisal of the Waterloo campaign and battle, and there is a detailed Order of Battle explaining the composition and organisation of the three armies involved.

Although restricted in space from illustrating every uniform worn at Waterloo, every branch of each participant army and nation (Britain, France, Prussia, Belgium, Holland, Brunswick, Hannover, and Nassau) is illustrated, and the uniform of every single Regiment has been described in the comprehensive series of notes.

Philip Haythornthwaite has been studying military history and uniforms since boyhood and now has numerous books on the uniforms, weapons and equipment of the armies of the late eighteenth and full span of the nineteenth centuries to his credit. The eighty pages of full colour plates are by Jack Cassin-Scott and Michael Chappell.
